Checkout and Customer Account UI Extensions Now Available by Default in New Development Shops

Shopify has ended the developer preview for checkout and customer account UI extensions. The change affects how developers access these extension types in newly created development stores.

What Changed

All new development shops on the Shopify Plus plan now have checkout UI extensions enabled by default. Customer account UI extensions are available by default across all new development shops, regardless of plan tier. Existing development shops retain their current configuration and are not affected by this update.

Impact on Shopify App Developers

Developers building apps that customize checkout or customer account pages no longer need to request access for these extension types in new development environments. This removes a setup step from the development workflow for apps that use checkout UI extensions or customer account UI extensions.

The change standardizes the development environment for these extension types. Apps using checkout UI extensions can now be tested immediately in new Plus development shops without additional configuration. Customer account customizations can be developed and tested across all plan tiers in new development stores.

Practical Implications

Developers creating new development shops for checkout customization projects will find these capabilities ready to use. Teams working on customer account extensions can test functionality across different plan levels in fresh development environments.

Existing development shops maintain their current settings, so ongoing projects continue without interruption. Developers who previously enrolled in the developer preview for these features will see no change in their existing environments.
