Shopify Simplifies Discount Tile Configuration in Smart Grid Editor
Shopify has updated the Smart Grid editor to streamline discount tile creation for Point of Sale users. The platform now provides a dropdown menu for selecting existing discount codes instead of requiring manual text entry.
What Changed
The Smart Grid editor now pulls discount codes directly from Shopify Admin when merchants create discount tiles. This replaces the previous manual entry system where merchants typed discount codes into the tile configuration. Each tile now links directly to a valid discount code, automatically applying the associated logic, eligibility rules, and discount values at checkout.
Merchants can access the updated interface through Shopify Admin > Point of Sale > Settings > Configure > POS app.
Developer Implications
This change affects developers building POS-related apps or discount management tools. Apps that integrate with Shopify’s discount system may see fewer support requests related to mismatched or invalid discount codes at the POS level. The direct linkage between tiles and Admin discount codes means the discount API becomes the single source of truth for POS discount configurations.
Developers working on POS customizations should note that discount tiles now enforce stricter validation against existing discount codes. Any custom discount workflows need to ensure codes exist in Shopify Admin before they can be referenced in Smart Grid tiles.
Technical Considerations
The update reduces the gap between discount code creation and POS implementation. Apps that create or manage discount codes programmatically through the Shopify API will now see those codes immediately available in the Smart Grid dropdown, improving the integration between backend discount management and frontend POS configuration.
