See which apps use Extensions and Functions to power your checkout, online store, and more

Shopify Adds Visibility Into App Extensions and Functions

Shopify now displays detailed information about which app features are active in merchant stores. Merchants can access this information by navigating to Settings > Apps and selecting any installed app to view its Extensions, Functions, and Pixels.

The new interface shows Extensions running on checkout, online store, customer accounts, and POS systems. It displays Functions that power checkout customizations, discounts, shipping and delivery, and payment processing. The view also identifies which apps are collecting data through Pixels and indicates which features are currently inactive.

What This Means for App Developers

This change increases transparency around how apps integrate with Shopify stores. Merchants can now see exactly which parts of their store an app is modifying or monitoring, which may influence their decisions about which apps to keep installed.

For developers, this visibility creates both opportunity and accountability. Apps that provide clear value through their Extensions and Functions may benefit from this transparency. However, apps using multiple Extensions or Functions across different store surfaces will now be more visible to merchants reviewing their app stack.

Practical Implications

Developers should ensure their app’s Extensions and Functions are properly named and documented, as merchants will now see these technical components directly. Apps that create unused or inactive Extensions may face questions from merchants about why certain features appear but aren’t being used.

The error resolution feature for Functions suggests Shopify is providing merchants with tools to troubleshoot issues independently, which may reduce support requests but also means developers need to ensure their Functions handle errors gracefully and provide clear error messages.
