New Cash Management Foundations for Shopify POS

Shopify Rebuilds Cash Management System for POS
Shopify has released a rebuilt cash management infrastructure for its Point of Sale system, introducing new register extension targets and APIs for tracking and reconciling cash transactions.
What Changed
The update replaces the existing cash management architecture across both the POS app and the POS channel in Shopify Admin. The new system introduces register sessions as the core organizational unit, allowing merchants to track cash activity from opening to closing. Each session now displays a summary view that includes payment breakdowns and granular cash activity logs showing drawer openings and the staff members responsible.
The platform adds native cash reason codes, which let merchants document why cash was added or removed from a register outside of regular sales transactions. A new cash drawer and ledger model provides the underlying data structure for these tracking capabilities.
Developer Implications
App developers building POS extensions now have access to new register extension targets and APIs for integrating with the cash management system. These APIs allow third-party apps to read register session data, access cash activity logs, and potentially build custom reporting or reconciliation tools on top of Shopify’s cash management foundation.
Developers working with the POS channel API should review their existing cash tracking implementations, as the new ledger model may affect how cash data is structured and accessed through the Admin API.
What to Watch
The changelog indicates this is a foundational release. Shopify typically builds additional features on top of new infrastructure in subsequent updates, suggesting more cash management capabilities may follow.
