New appSubscriptionCancel mutation in the Partner API

Shopify Adds Programmatic Subscription Cancellation to Partner API
Shopify introduces the appSubscriptionCancel mutation in Partner API version 2026-07, allowing app developers to programmatically cancel subscriptions for their public apps. The mutation provides developers with direct API access to subscription management functions previously available only through the Partner Dashboard.
Cancellation Options and Features
The new mutation supports four key capabilities. Developers can trigger immediate subscription cancellations or schedule deferred cancellations that take effect at the end of the current billing cycle. The mutation includes an option to request prorated credits when applicable to the cancellation scenario. For usage-based billing models, developers can choose to skip the final usage charge during cancellation.
Access to the appSubscriptionCancel mutation requires View financials permission in the Partner Dashboard. This permission gate ensures that only authorized team members can execute subscription cancellations through the API.
Impact on Subscription Management Workflows
This mutation enables developers to build automated subscription management flows within their own systems. Apps that handle customer offboarding, billing disputes, or account migrations can now process cancellations without manual Partner Dashboard intervention. The deferred cancellation option supports grace period implementations, while the prorated credit feature aligns with standard SaaS billing practices.
The mutation applies exclusively to public apps, maintaining the existing distinction between public and custom app subscription management. Developers working with API version 2026-07 or later can integrate this functionality into their existing Partner API implementations.
