App intents on `admin.app.intent.link` now open as a full-page navigation

Source: Shopify Dev Changelog

Shopify Changes App Intent Navigation Behavior

Shopify has modified how app intents declared on the admin.app.intent.link extension target behave when invoked by Sidekick. The platform now navigates merchants to the extension’s URL as a full page instead of opening the intent in an overlay.

This change brings third-party app intents in line with how Shopify’s native admin intents function. Previously, when Sidekick triggered an app intent on this extension target, it would display as an overlay on top of the merchant’s current page.

Implementation Details

The update is now live across all Shopify stores and does not require any action from developers. The change is not gated by API version and works with existing extension configurations, intent schemas, and development tools.

Impact on App Developers

Developers building apps with admin.app.intent.link extensions should verify how this navigation change affects their user experience. The full-page navigation means merchants will leave their current admin context when Sidekick invokes an app intent, rather than viewing the extension content in a modal or overlay.

This shift may affect how merchants interact with app features accessed through Sidekick. Apps that previously relied on the overlay behavior to maintain context with the underlying admin page will now need to handle full-page navigation patterns.

Developers should test their app intents with Sidekick to ensure the full-page navigation provides the intended user experience and that any necessary context or state management works correctly with the new behavior.
