Shopify Adds Translatable Field to Metafield GraphQL Object

What Changed

Shopify has introduced a new field to the Metafield object in the GraphQL Admin API, available starting with API version 2026-10. The field, translatable: Boolean!, is a non-null boolean that indicates whether a given metafield’s value supports translation.

Previously, apps needed to query this information separately by shop to determine translatability. With this update, the data is now exposed directly on the Metafield object itself, making it accessible in the same query used to fetch metafield data.

Why This Matters for Shopify App Developers

Apps that work with translatable metafields, particularly those supporting multi-language storefronts or integrating with Shopify’s translation APIs, can now retrieve translatability status in a single request. This simplifies query structures for apps handling localization, content management, or multi-market storefronts built on the GraphQL Admin API.

For developers building apps that check whether specific metafields can be translated before initiating translation workflows, this reduces the need for additional API calls or shop-level lookups. It also aligns the field-level metadata with modern GraphQL API design patterns, where related data is colocated on the relevant object.

Practical Implications and What to Watch

Apps that do not currently query translatable metafields by shop require no changes and are unaffected by this update.

Developers planning to migrate to API version 2026-10 should review their metafield queries and consider whether the new translatable field can replace separate lookups in their codebase. Since the field is non-null, it will always return a boolean value once queried, simplifying conditional logic in translation-related features.

Teams maintaining apps across multiple API versions should confirm that GraphQL schema introspection and type definitions are updated accordingly before adopting 2026-10 in production.
