ASO FOR SHOPIFY APPS

Most ASO advice treats the App Store like a checklist: fix the title, add keywords, get more reviews. Apps that work the whole checklist still stall, because the checklist assumes the listing is already aimed at the right merchant.

I'm Ohad Michaeli, a Shopify app growth consultant. I've audited 100+ Shopify App Store listings since 2020. Here's how I work the ASO slice of that funnel.

What ASO Fixes, and What It Can't

ASO covers title, keywords, category placement, screenshots, and review strategy. In funnel terms, that's discovery and conversion: whether a merchant searching for your category finds you, and whether they install once they land.

It does not cover whether the merchant who installs sticks around, and it can't fix a listing that's optimized for the wrong merchant in the first place. A cleaner title just gets the wrong audience to your page faster. Positioning comes first, or the ASO work has nothing true to amplify. More on that split in how to position your Shopify app. Category by category, see the Shopify App Store optimization guides.

What the Audit Checks

Title and keyword fit

Whether your title and keywords match how merchants actually describe the problem. See why your Shopify app isn't getting installs.

Listing-to-install conversion

Views that don't turn into installs point at the listing. See listing gets views but no installs.

Review language

Merchants describe your app in their own words in reviews, language that usually belongs in your listing but rarely makes it there. See reviews as positioning intelligence.

Category and discovery

Whether you're even in the category merchants search when they have the problem you solve, versus the category that best describes the feature set. See the positioning trap in category keywords.

Who This Is For

  • ✓

Apps getting search impressions that aren't converting to installs

  • ✓

Founders who rewrote the listing once already and saw no movement

  • ✓

Apps with reviews and traction that still read like a feature list

Who This Is Not For

  • ✗

Apps with zero reviews and zero installs yet. There's no listing signal to diagnose. Start with positioning, not ASO.

  • ✗

Anyone wanting someone else's exact keyword list. Your merchants aren't theirs, and the words that work are specific to your reviews and your category.

How the Work Runs

It starts with a written App Audit against your actual listing, search terms, and reviews, ending in what's broken and the order to fix it in. If the audit finds the real constraint is positioning or retention rather than the listing itself, I'll say so. Full detail on the audit and what follows it on the services page.

Common Questions

What is ASO for a Shopify app?

App Store optimization for Shopify apps: title, keywords, category, screenshots, and review strategy, tuned so the merchant searching for your category actually finds and chooses your listing. It covers discovery and conversion, but not whether the app keeps merchants once they install.

Why do ASO changes sometimes not move installs?

Because the listing was optimized for the wrong merchant. Better keywords and a cleaner title just get the wrong audience to the page faster. Positioning has to be right before ASO work has something true to amplify.

How is this different from the Shopify App Growth Consultant work?

This page is the ASO slice on its own: listing, keywords, screenshots, reviews. The growth consultant work is the whole funnel, discovery through retention, when more than the listing is the constraint.

Do you do the ASO work yourself or hand it to a team?

I do the audit and the diagnosis myself, against your actual search terms, reviews, and listing data. Implementation details depend on scope, set after the audit.

The audit finds the cause of views without installs.
