Shopify Shares Compare-At Prices with AI Shopping Agents
What Changed
Shopify now includes compare-at prices in the data it shares with AI shopping agents through Shopify Catalog. Previously, AI agents reading product data from Catalog only had access to the current price, with no visibility into markdown or original pricing information that appears on the storefront.
With this update, when a merchant marks down a product and displays a compare-at price (the “was” price shown alongside a sale price), that same data point is now passed to agentic shopping channels. This means AI agents can recognize when a product is discounted, not just see its final price.
Merchants control this feature through a toggle in the Shopify admin, located in the Compare-at section of catalog settings. This allows store owners to opt in or out of sharing markdown data with AI agents independent of how compare-at prices are displayed on their storefront.
Why This Matters for App Developers
This update reflects Shopify’s ongoing build-out of Catalog as a structured data layer for agentic commerce. For developers building apps that interact with product data, pricing logic, or sync with Shopify Catalog, this adds another field that AI shopping agents may factor into purchase recommendations or comparisons.
Apps that manage pricing rules, discount campaigns, or markdown strategies should account for this new data flow, particularly if they offer merchants control over how pricing information is surfaced across channels.
What to Watch For
Developers should review how their apps read from or write to Catalog, and confirm whether compare-at price settings are configured correctly for merchants using their tools. As agentic shopping channels expand, staying aligned with Shopify’s Catalog mapping documentation will be important for maintaining accurate product data across both human and AI-driven shopping experiences.
